Family Update

Meet Aeson

We first introduced you to Aeson Moen in September 2016. His family was one of the first to stay in our 73-bedroom House when Aeson was diagnosed with cancer at just 13 months old. This September, Aeson is starting Grade 1 and his family is giving back.

Over the past 5 years, Aaron, Ana and Aeson Moen have seen a lot of changes at Ronald McDonald House. As one of the first guests in our new 73-bedroom House, Aaron remembers helping staff to unpack toys and build play structures – some of which are still favourites today.

Over the years, they have seen programs grow at RMH BC and are happy to see so many more meal groups and kids’ activities in the House. And when they see groups of families meeting in the courtyards at night to swap stories, they think back to their long stay in 2014 and the friends they made.

Aeson, just 13 months old when he was diagnosed with cancer, is now 6 years old and bursting with energy. He loved kindergarten (“He would go Monday to Sunday if he could,” his dad laughs) and is excited to start Grade 1 this September. His favourite things are beyblades, Pokemon and playing outside. This past year he got really into soccer and is excited to start playing baseball as well.

November 2019 will mark 5 years post-treatment for the Moen family, which means that Aeson will only need to come back to Vancouver for tests once a year. Even though the Moens are now spending less time at the House, it still holds a special place in their hearts. Aaron and Ana are grateful for the community of support they found at RMH BC and still keep in touch with the families they met during the most stressful times. “It’s a bond you’ll never have with anybody else,” says Ana.

The Moens also continue to fundraise for the House and host a golf tournament every September (in honour of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month) with all proceeds supporting RMH BC. The Aeson Moen Golf Tournament is now in its 4th year and takes place September 28th at Twin Lakes Golf Course. This year they hope to reach $20,000 raised for the House!
