Bob & Jennifer Gardner - Volunteers at RMH BC

Meet The Gardners

As regular volunteers, what inspires you to go further and become a monthly donor?

Bob: I think it would be safe to say that that it’s always been our spirit to give. We’ve had different experiences in our life where we’ve been able to contribute. When we first moved into this neighborhood, Jennifer signed up to volunteer with RMH. We’re both educators and have seen former student with their children here at RMH BC that are the same age as our grandchildren.

We just see the power of what RMH BC does. So, we decided to become monthly donors to have some involvement. We understand the financial stability that’s required to keep these kind of commitments to families, as opposed to once a year. It just made sense to make a monthly commitment, so that we could meet our goals for supporting the community but also help RMHBC meet its goals in supporting families.“

What programs offered here are in RMH BC, are you proud to support as a Housewarmer?

Jennifer: The Literacy Program for sure, it’s really close to my heart because my background is in literacy and prescriptive and diagnostic teaching. I know the child patients often have programs, but I think it’s the little brothers and sisters who I worry about here.

And the programs supporting moms, whether it’s massage or art therapy, I know what it’s like to be extraordinarily tired mom, but to be extraordinarily tired with a really sick child is a whole different ball game.

What are some examples of housewarming moments that you've seen and would like to share with others?

Bob: What’s cool is watching the level of interaction between families. I know that we talk about support, but we have no idea what it’s like to walk a mile in their shoes. So, to watch those connections… wow!

Jennifer: For me, it’s all about children. When the little ones like Ivy come up to me with those big eyes and are just looking to help. I love planning an activity to suit their diverse needs. So, the connection is with the children because that’s where my heart is.

When our friends ask why are you volunteering at RMH BC? The more Bob and I came here, the more we realize that the staff here care about the same things we do – support for children and support for families. And to watch how your staff interacts with each other, with Bob and I and the level of commandment is really impressive.
