Making a
difference
with music

11-year-old violinist Maya has found a unique way to support kids and families at RMH BC. She spent the summer busking at Nanaimo Harbour and raised $1002.10 for the House – and is now challenging the community to match her gift!

At just 11 years old, Maya Harbo has found a true passion – music – and a unique way to make a difference to her fellow kids.

All summer, Maya has been busking at the Nanaimo Harbour by donation to Ronald McDonald House BC and Yukon. Through her tireless efforts, she was able to raise $1002.10 for seriously ill children and their families. Now, she is challenging her community to match her gift and raise another $1000.

Maya first asked her parents if she could start playing the violin at the age of 6. Five years later, she is still going strong and enjoys challenging herself with new pieces. She also plays piano, but violin is by far her favourite. Maya will soon be entering Grade 6 at Mountain View Elementary, and first performed her music at her school’s anti-bullying day – in front of 400 people!

Ever since the age of 7, she dreamed of getting her busking license – and finally in July 2015, that dream became a reality. In 2016, she made a plan to raise money by busking, and chose Ronald McDonald House because two friends had stayed there.

When she is not volunteering and playing music, Maya loves to read, spend time with friends, make crafts and be outdoors.
