I WANTED TO HELP
other children who were sick stay with their families while they were being treated.”

It started as a classroom challenge to make a positive impact in the community, from raking leaves in a neighbour’s yard to making sandwiches for the homeless.

Keira Jamal decided to set her sights high and raise funds for families in need by hosting a skating party for family and friends. Her hard work paid off, and with the support of the community, family and friends, she was able to raise $5300. And she’s not done yet – Keira plans to hold the same event next year as an annual fundraiser!

Keira recently told us why she chose to support Ronald McDonald House BC and Yukon, and also shared some advice for everyone who is thinking about hosting their own fundraiser.

How did you choose Ronald McDonald House ?
“I was watching videos on YouTube and found one about a little girl in Prince George who got cancer. In the beginning, she had to move to Vancouver with her mom only and leave her sister and dad at home. Because of the RMH, the whole family was allowed to move to Vancouver and live together and that helped her get better. I thought about how I would feel if I got sick and had to be away from my sister and my dad and how sad that would make me. I wanted to help other children who were sick stay with their families while they were being treated.”

Why did you choose a skating party?
“I chose to do a skating party because I love to skate and I know other people would love to skate too.”

What was the most fun part of having a fundraiser?
“The skating party was very fun and it felt good to have all my friends and family come to visit me. It was also fun to know that I was helping other kids.”

Do have any tips for other people who might be interested in fundraising?
1.  Don’t be afraid to start a fundraiser – you will be surprised how good it makes you feel!
2.  Don’t be afraid to ask people to help you – I was surprised that so many people were so happy to help me and gave me discounts!
3.  Plan something that you would want to go to yourself…. if you think its fun, so will other people.
4.  Don’t forget to thank the people that help you.
5.  Be happy the whole time you’re doing it!
